The comments of the second paper submitted to IEEE Transaction on Power Electronics

The comments of the second paper submitted to IEEE Transaction on Power Electronics

Yesterday is a big day due to the wedding of Mr. Lin ZhengYu and Mrs. Liu Ying, who both are the team members of our lab. Great science results in great love! They falled in love each other when they bended theirselves to the reseach on Power Electronics several years ago. Then they both went to British to continue their dreams of the future. They came back from British and hold their wedding yesterday. The wedding is the most romantic and impressive, which I have attended. And it is a great feast for our lab, because most of the members of our lab gathered and have a big communication.

For me, another good news is coming. When I came back from their wedding, I opened my email and got an email from the editor-in-chief of IEEE Transaction on Power Electronics, which is the best journal in our major and every Ph.D canditate majored in power electronics is dreaming to publish his paper on it.

Good news always comes from another good news! The second paper I submitted to PE about two months ago has been reviewed and the result seems acceptable, beccause the reviewers give me the chance to make this paper pubnished in the journal.

After I told this good news to my best brother, who is now in Taiwan. Then I made a call to Liu YunFeng, who is a Ph.D from CPES, where is the Holy Land of Power Electronics. I gave him my heart-thanks for his encouragement and help in my way of research.

And I should give my thanks to all the peaple, who helped me. I cannot write down the names of all of you, but you know who you are.

The following is the email from the editor-in-chief of IEEE Transaction on Power Electronics

The following changes are mandatory:
1. How to derive this topology should be shown and the past work using
coupled inductors for interleaved topologies should be referred. This
will offer readers easy understanding of this topology. One possible way
is starting from one (or two) active-clamp Flyback converter. To change
the converter to a boost type performance, the discharge voltage needs
to be Vo-Vin instead of Vo. That is the reason to add the third coupled
winding from another phase. It is then easy to understand why the
converter must be operated with D>0.5. The readers will appreciate the
thinking process and the presentation.

2. Fig. 3(a) clearly shows hard switching of the main switch for both
turn on and turn off. The claimed ZVT turn off for the Sc is also
questionable in Fig. 3(b). The authors should address this question
seriously.

3. Do1 should be D1 in Fig. 12. The waveform of the output rectifier
should be shown instead of the Vds1 waveform since the reduced voltage
stress of the output rectifier is claimed as one of the major benefits.

4. The equations (8) and (10) can not be intuitively understood by the
readers. The equations should be derived step by step in the paper or
in an appendix. Meanwhile, the equations (1) to (5) are not important.
It might be better by just focusing on the key equations.

5. Fig. (3) should be redrawn. The big connection dots are very
distracting. Some ground symbols are corrupted. The connection point at the
drain of the main switch is far from a professional looking. Fig. (4)
shows the key operation waveforms, so the authors should pay special
attention to every detail. Reducing the weight of the vertical
dashed time lines helps uncover the details. For an example, the slope
of Ilk1 is reduced between [t2, t3] than that between [to, t2]. A
transaction paper should be as rigorous as possible.

6. The quality of experimental waveforms (Fig. 10 to Fig. 12) needs to
be improved.

7. The guideline for the figures for IEEE publications should be
followed. The labels of vertical and horizontal axes should be marked with
proper fonts outside the pictures. The authors' names in the references
should be in a consistent format (initial of the first name. last name).

The following changes are suggested to the authors.
1. The authors should check the paper carefully to use English
correctly. Some suggested changes are:
The location || The original wording   || Suggested changes
P2 line 20    || energy transmission || energy transfer
P3 line 49    || However, it is          || It is not clear what "it"
refers to.
P7 line 31   ||  The primary side is parallel  || The two primary sides
are parallel
P7 line 33   ||  The secondary side is series || The two secondary
sides are in series
P20 line 44 || So the switching...      || Delete "So"
P20 line 49 || So the low voltage...    || Low voltage, low RDS-on
devices..
P20 line 49 || So the low voltage...    || Delete "So"

2. The presentation and low-quality pictures of this paper dramatically
degrade the value of the work. The authors should pay much more
attentions to improve the quality of writing and figures in the future. The
guideline for the IEEE publications should be followed.

As I have mentioned in the first section of this Score Sheet, the
authors should clarify whether the converter shown in Fig. 3a is a new
converter. This is an important issue because the converter presented in
this paper is a topological modification of the above mentioned converter
and, therefore, the originality of this paper depends on the
originality of that converter. This clarification is mandatory.

At the beginning of the paper, authors give information about several
converters suitable to obtain high output voltage, some of them derived
from the basic boost converter (with galvanic isolation) and others
derived from resonant converters. However, a voltage conversion from 40V
to 760V (not so high) can be achieved by using other standard
converters, such as phase-shifted full bridge converters. In this case, standard
IC controllers can be used, instead of one specific one as it should be
used in the case of the proposed converter. However, the proposed
converter seems to be interesting and, from my personal point of view, the
paper should be published with some changes:

1- Some details about the generation of the control signal should be
provided.

2- The switching frequency used in the converter (50 kHz) is quite low
for an 1 kW prototype. Some experimental results about the efficiency
at higher frequencies (such as 100 kHz and 200 kHz, which are usual
switching frequencies for other topologies) could give us more information
about the real advantages of the proposed converter.

3- The advantages of the proposed converter should be compared with
other converter different to the one shown in Fig. 3.a, which is very
similar to the proposed one (for example, a phase-shifted full bridge
converter). However, the reviewer understands that to build another 1kW
converter to establish this comparison is very hard task. Therefore, this
comment is not a mandatory one.

4- (See Page 21) The proposed converter has a disadvantage in
comparison with the one shown in Fig. 3a: It has only one main switch with its
source terminal connected to ground and, however, the converter shown in
Fig. 3a has its two main switches with their source terminals connected
to ground, which simplifies the driving system of these switches.
Authors should comment something about this.

5-Some detailed mistakes are listed below:
  5.1 Page 16: ... 揳rt-of-the-state攨 should be 厯state-of-the- art攨
  5.2 Page 18: ... 搃nductors Pindct, The conduction losses??should
be ?搃nductors  Pindct, the conduction losses攨
5.3 Page 19: you should clarify the meaning of the power losses that
appears in Fig. 9 and have not been mentioned in Page 18.
5.4 Page 20: ... 揵ellows攨 ?should be ?揵elow?

EIC : More journal paper references should be added
